About

We take a comprehensive, team approach in diagnosing and treating prostate cancer, which includes a patient evaluation in screening for prostate cancer, detecting it at its earliest disease stage, providing a patient-oriented treatment plan and subsequent support. Our specialists will define treatment goals based on the specific details of the prostate cancer, previous treatments if any, and quality-of-life issues. Where cure is possible, we offer state-of-the-art surgical approaches and radiation delivery.

Where cure is not possible, we offer state-of-the-art treatment approaches to prolong survival and to maximize quality-of-life. The Odette Cancer Center also has leading scientists and clinicians dedicated in prostate cancer research excellence. We have developed many laboratory and clinical advances in the management of prostate cancer that helps with our understanding and how we treat men with prostate cancer.

At Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre patients are currently only being treated for whole-gland prostate ablation (leaving appropriate safety margins to preserve important structures in the prostate with the goal of minimizing side effects), in a very individual manner as a part of the CAPTAIN Randomized Control Trial.

Inquiries only for Participation in CAPTAIN RCT WHOLE-GLAND Clinical Trial

Patients selected for this trial must meet the following inclusion criteria:

Inclusions: Male, age 45 to 80 years, with biopsy-confirmed, NCCN intermediate-risk prostate cancer, Grade Group 2 or 3 disease. PSA≤20ng/mL. Treatment-naïve.
Exclusions: Inability to undergo MRI or general anesthesia; patients with unresolved urinary tract infection, prostatitis, history of proctitis, bladder stones, hematuria, history of acute urinary retention, severe neurogenic bladder, artificial urinary sphincter, penile implant, intraprostatic implant; history of anal or rectal fibrosis or stenosis, or urethral stenosis; patients who have less than 10 years life expectancy or who are otherwise not deemed candidates for radical prostatectomy; inability or unwillingness to provide informed consent.

Laurence Klotz, MD, is the former Chief of Urology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and former President of the Urological Research Society and the Canadian Urological Association. He currently serves as Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and holds the Sunnybrook Chair of Prostate Cancer Research.
