Eric Walser, MD, FACR
About
Leading authority and researcher in minimally invasive focal therapy for prostate cancer and BPH, former Professor and Chairman of Radiology at University of Texas
Dr. Eric Walser is recognized as a pioneer in focal ablation of prostate cancer. As a clinician, he is an expert in minimally invasive image-guided treatments for both prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As a researcher, Dr. Walser has demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of focal treatment, with published results on over 400 focally treated patients.
Dr. Walser comes to Sperling Prostate Center after serving over 10 years as Professor and Chairman of Radiology at University of Texas. During his tenure, he began the institutional prostate ablation program. In 2019, he and Dr. Dan Sperling were members of an international panel of experts to develop a consensus statement on MRI-guided focal laser ablation of prostate cancer. They have been friends and collaborators in men’s health ever since.
Dr. Walser is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Board of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North American, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Congress of Interventional Radiology of Europe and others. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology and his fellowship in Interventional Radiology & Body Imaging at Indiana University Medical Center in 1993.
Dr. Walser began diagnosing and treating prostate cancer in 2011 at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. Since then, he has treated over 500 patients with prostate cancer and performed thousands of procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate disease.
Dr. Walser is widely published and has been interviewed in the Houston media for his work in prostate cancer. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his teaching and innovative research. He was a panelist on “The Doctor’s show” on NBC discussing the use of laser in ablating tumors. With over 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Walser continues to research new clinical technologies and methods.
Dr. Walser is excited to bring his experience and talents to the Sperling Prostate Center. He states, “As someone who has spent many years in leadership and academic institutions, it’s time to step away from that and devote that expertise to patients in a community practice.”
Specialty areas of practice
Dr. Walser is committed to improving patient lives through the benefits of focal treatments for prostate cancer and BPH. Most recently, he is a key developer of MRI-directed Ultrasound Guided Transperineal Focal Laser Ablation (TPLA), adding this new approach to focal therapies at the Sperling Prostate Center. He continues to explore cutting edge technologies in MRI procedures and the use of AI for prostate diagnosis and precision therapy.
