Dr. John F. Ward is a distinguished Professor of Urology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, internationally recognized for his expertise and leadership in prostate and testicular cancer care. Fellowship-trained in urologic oncology at the Mayo Clinic and board certified by the American Board of Urology, Dr. Ward has dedicated his career to advancing innovative, organ-preserving treatment strategies for genitourinary malignancies.

Dr. Ward’s clinical practice focuses on the comprehensive management of prostate and testicular cancers. He has been instrumental in advancing prostate cancer imaging, targeted biopsy techniques, and focal therapy approaches. He created and led the MD Anderson Prostate Cancer Focal Therapy Program, establishing it as a premier center for minimally invasive, precision-based treatment. A recognized authority in the field, Dr. Ward is a founding member and leader within the Focal Therapy Society, contributing significantly to the evolution and global adoption of focal therapy. He serves as a visiting professor around the world, lecturing on focal therapy and performing advanced surgical procedures, and is widely regarded as a global thought leader in prostate cancer innovation.

Prior to joining the MD Anderson faculty in 2006, Dr. Ward served as Chief of Urologic Oncology at the Nevada Cancer Institute. He also served with distinction in the United States Navy, where he was Assistant Head of Urology at Naval Medical Center Norfolk and Head of Urologic Oncology, ultimately achieving the rank of Commander.

A prolific author and respected educator, Dr. Ward has published extensively on prostate cancer diagnosis, imaging, and innovative treatment modalities. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and an active member of the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncologists. His commitment to clinical excellence, research innovation, and physician education continues to advance the standard of care in urologic oncology.

Dr. Ward graduated with high honors from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he served as student body president. He earned his undergraduate degree with high honors in Biology from the University of Notre Dame, where he was an NCAA Division I swimmer for the Fighting Irish. His dedication to leadership, discipline, and excellence has defined both his academic and professional career.
